Basement Cabinetry FAQs

Why can't basement cabinets sit directly on the floor?
Because a concrete slab passes ground moisture upward continuously. Cabinetry sitting flat on it wicks that moisture into the base, which swells the toe kick and eventually lifts the finish. A raised, sealed plinth solves it and costs very little at build time.
Will basement humidity damage my cabinets?
It can if the wrong materials are used. Plywood construction handles the humidity swing that furniture board does not recover from. A dehumidifier in the space helps considerably and is worth having regardless of the cabinetry.
Can I build cabinets over a basement window?
Not if it is an egress window. Emergency egress openings must remain unobstructed, which is a life safety requirement rather than a preference. We check window function before planning any wall of storage.
My basement ceiling is low and uneven. Can you work with that?
Yes, and it is normal. Ducts, beams, and pipe runs mean the usable height varies across a single wall. We measure at multiple points and use scribe pieces and fillers so cabinetry meets whatever the ceiling actually does rather than what a drawing assumes.
Should basement cabinetry match the rest of the house?
In a finished lower level, usually yes, because matching stops the basement reading as an afterthought. In an unfinished utility area, function should win and we build closer to a garage specification.
